welcome to discover tourism

travel & work in Anglesey

Discover Tourism is a new education classroom resource on the tourism sector in Anglesey developed in 2019 by employers. It was created with support and guidance from the Regional Skills Partnership the education sector and financed by the Welsh Government.

The purpose of the resource is to ignite young pupils’ curiosity and excitement about the wide range of quality career opportunities that the tourism industry has to offer them in the future on Anglesey, and beyond. This resource encourages pupils to make the connection between what they learn in the classroom from a young age and its value and relevance in the ‘real’ world later in life, as adults in the workplace.

The purpose of these activities

This resource is developed for two reasons :

  1. Raise the profile of Tourism as an important employment sector on Anglesey, North Wales and beyond.  Change traditional and out dated perceptions of what the industry has to offer as a career.  Highlight what pupils could achieve working in tourism, and consider Tourism as a quality career with prospects and rewards when looking at what to do after school, college or University.
  2. Harness the opportunity to add value to the development of the New Curriculum for Wales with new and exciting materials using local knowledge. Education plays a vital role that, directly and/or indirectly, influences and shape’s children’s and young people’s job and career ideas, perceptions, ambitions and aspirations.

This is a call for jobs and careers in the tourism to have a real boost in the education sector to demonstrate to children, young people, parents and teachers that there’s a lot on offer in this vital industry, for Anglesey especially,  and in North Wales.

What will pupils learn?

That learning and continued use of the Welsh language is essential to tourism and adds value to most jobs.

History and culture is a cross cutting theme in the tourism industry and will add value to the humanities area of learning and experience in the new curriculum, bringing real life examples to ignite pupils learning.

Maths, Science,  Computers/IT and digital learning are key cross cutting themes in school and the new curriculum.  These functions, tasks and skills are very much a daily practical skill within the tourism sector as well!

Sport is very closely linked to tourism and the Welsh Government wants to make North Wales the ‘Adventure Tourism’ destination in Wales!  This is a very exciting development for the sector which needs more people to bring new ideas, have special training, be new instructors and coaches, understand health and safety and love working with people.
