Focus on Anglesey

by Neil Rowlands | Chair of Anglesey Enterprise Zone for Tourism

Tourism is part of the life blood of Anglesey, with over 4,500 people directly employed, or 18% of the workforce on Anglesey working in the tourism industry-almost 1 in 5 people work in tourism. Anglesey is the most dependant region in the whole of the UK in terms of reliance on tourism for work.   In 2018 on Anglesey, the tourism industry generated £304m income for the island.

These are BIG numbers, and here are some more …..

The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, when fill can sit 73,931 people.  If you put all the people currently living on Anglesey in this stadium, it wouldn’t be full!  The current population of Anglesey is 69,794.  However, the tourism numbers who visit Anglesey annually is staggering!

Over 1m people stay overnight on Anglesey every year.  That’s equivalent to 15 stadiums full of people!  680,000 people also visit just for the day, that’s another 9 stadiums full.  Anglesey has the capacity for 24 stadiums full of people visiting every year.  Another 2m people see the Island when passing through from the Ferries to and from Ireland – another 27 stadiums full!

There must be loads of excellent things for visitors to do and see on Anglesey, lots of great places to visit and stay!

That’s the size of tourism on Anglesey alone, never mind in Gwynedd, North Wales and Wales as a whole.  Tourism is a BIG business with excellent opportunities, careers and jobs for children, young people, parents and teachers to get excited about and know more about.

However, the tourism industry on the Island, and in North Wales, has a real and worrying skills gap and a real need for new talent and more young people to want to join the industry to help the industry prosper, as well as keeping local talent, the Welsh language and skills in the local economy.

Enjoy these activities with the pupils!
